Thekkady
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 777 km ² (300 square miles) of which 360 km ² (139 square miles) is thick evergreen forest. The Wild Life Sanctuary was declared a tiger reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by damming the Periyar River Mullaiperiyar enhances the charm of the park. The greatest attraction of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants coming down to play in the lake. Munnar Thekkady package is one of the biggest attractions of Kerala tourism.
It lies about 15 km from Thekkady and is located at an altitude of 1337 meters. It is surrounded by lush vegetation and is closed all year except Chitra Pournami festival. At other times visitors can still see getting a special letter from the forest. The view from the temple premises is spectacular, and you can see part of the Eastern Ghats and some villages in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu.
